Current Research
My research focuses on thermal spray coatings in three primary areas:
- Thermal and environmental protection in gas turbine engines operated using alternative fuels
- Bioactive coatings for implants
- Wear and corrosion resistant coatings for applications where tribocorrion prevention is required
Overall, my research is motivated by investigating the materials science of thermally sprayed coatings in which links between processing, microstructure, properties, and performance are determined. From this basis, improvements can be made in processing to enhance the performance of components through surface modification. Thermal spray processing allows for deposition of thick films of almost any material (metals, ceramics, and polymers) allowing us to explore unique solutions in areas involving thermal management, environmental protection, wear resistance, biocompatibility, and energy efficiency. By investigating material properties, including mechanical properties via indentation techniques, phase and residual stress distributions via transmission synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and wear and corrosion properties via tribology and electrochemical experiments, a greater understanding of thermal spray science and it relationship to materials science is achieved.
